UCSF Recruits Director of Academic Diversity

UCSF is looking to fill a new position, director of academic diversity, to provide leadership and oversight for implementation of key initiatives undertaken to nurture and enhance diversity among faculty and trainees (students, residents and postdoctoral scholars). Replacement funds to cover salary up to 50 percent will be provided to support this position. Working with the vice provost, associate vice chancellor - student academic affairs, the executive vice chancellor and provost, the deans, and relevant chancellor's and Academic Senate committees, the director of academic diversity will serve as the point person for ensuring the advancement and timely completion of academically related diversity initiatives at UCSF and for coordinating with relevant systemwide committees. Current efforts include initiatives to: * implement a comprehensive communication program, * establish a new faculty database, * implement best practices for faculty searches, * develop a comprehensive program promoting diversity among trainees, and * establish a coordinated outreach program. The director of academic diversity also will work closely with leaders in the four professional schools to maintain school-specific diversity plans, as well as with Graduate Division leaders to maintain such a plan. Last month, UCSF unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance diversity, which pinpoints 10 key outcomes to be completed this year. One outcome is to recruit a director of academic diversity. Qualifications for the director of academic diversity position include being a UCSF faculty member, ability to dedicate approximately 50 percent effort, demonstrated commitment to improving diversity at UCSF, knowledge of existing UCSF diversity programs and initiatives, prior success with program development and management, and demonstrated ability to productively engage faculty, staff and trainees from diverse backgrounds. Candidates must submit a cover letter outlining qualifications for and interest in serving as the director of academic diversity, a copy of their current CV and a letter from their department chair supporting their application, additional internal and/or external letters (no more than three total) of support are encouraged.
