Autism in US More Prevalent than Thought
In the largest report yet on autism from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 150 American children are found to have been diagnosed with the disorder. "We don't know that the incidence is increasing, we know that how we're defining it is capturing a broader population of individuals," said autism expert Bryna Siegel, PhD, in interviews with KPIX-TV and KGO-TV. Siegel said regardless of what behaviors are now considered within the autistic spectrum, the focus should be on how to help the child.
Siegel is adjunct professor in the UCSF Department of Psychiatry, and director of the UCSF Autism Clinic at the Children's Center at Langley Porter.
