Center for Gender Equity to Host Program About Parenting
The campus community is invited to hear author and educator Rosalind Wiseman present a program on parenting, education and social justice at UCSF on
February 7. Hosted by the Center for Gender Equity at UCSF, Wiseman will present "Queen Bees & Wannabes: What the Rules of Girl World and Boy World Mean to a Teen," on Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., in the Lange Room at the library, 530 Parnassus Ave. Part of its Raising Healthy Boys Series, this breakfast program is for parents, guardians, caretakers, youth workers and anyone interested in helping young people successfully navigate the social challenges of young adulthood. In her interactive multi-media presentation, Wiseman will show how cliques, bullying and social hierarchies among children and adults can be placed in a larger context of social justice. Every participant will learn positive ways to impact their relationships. In her trademark style -- empathic, funny, and unfailingly honest -- Wiseman will explore: * How to recognize the archetypal moms and dads; * How and when to get involved in a child's conflicts with other children, parents, teachers, or coaches; * How to handle parties, sports, risky behavior, and academic performance affects on children and * How unspoken assumptions about race, religion, and other hot-button subjects sabotage parents' ability to work together. Wiseman founded the Empower Program, a national violence-prevention program in 1992. Since then, she has gone on to work with many students, educators, parents, counselors, coaches, and administrators to create communities based on the belief that each person has a responsibility to treat themselves and others with dignity. Wiseman is the author of the New York Times best-seller Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence (upon which the Hollywood movie Mean Girls was based) and Queen Bee Moms and Kingpin Dads. The registration fee is $15, pre-registration required and breakfast is included. Call Victoria Auer at 415/476-5222 or register here. Related Links: Rosalind Wiseman website
