UCSF to Host First Annual Interprofessional Education Day
For the first time, UCSF is hosting an interprofessional education day, when first-year students from all four schools will come together to learn about patient safety and the importance of communication.
The First Annual UCSF Interprofessional Education Day will start at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the Millberry Union Gym on the Parnassus campus. The day is designed to be part of the regular curriculum and is sponsored by the schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy and the physical therapy program.
The theme of the day is "Patient Safety and the Value of Team Training as Health Professionals."
Every student will receive a complimentary copy of the book, Internal Bleeding: The Truth Behind America's Terrifying Epidemic of Medical Mistakes, which exposes the many errors doctors and nurses make that kill nearly 100,000 patients every year in the United States. The book is written by Robert Wachter, MD, professor and associate chair of the Department of Medicine at UCSF. He is chief of the medical service and co-chair of the patient safety committee at UCSF Medical Center.
Scheduled speakers on Wednesday include all four deans, Mark Laret, chief executive officer of UCSF Medical Center, and Wachter.
The day will conclude with Chancellor Mike Bishop's annual reception for all new students in the Millberry Union Conference Center from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
