UCSF Hosts Inaugural Faculty Welcoming Week

UCSF invites junior and new faculty, including those who have been hired over the past two years, to a series of events beginning September 18. The week-long series, sponsored by the Chancellor's Council on Faculty Life, will cover such topics as negotiating skills, managing difficult work situations, retirement planning, tips on using library resources, and quality of life issues, from child care to transportation. Two campus-wide programs will welcome faculty and discuss the Academic Senate and the academic advancement process. These main events are scheduled for:
  • Monday, Sept.18 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Parnassus campus, where Chancellor Mike Bishop will make opening remarks, and
  • Wednesday, Sept, 20 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Mission Bay campus, where Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Eugene Washington will greet faculty.
In addition, workshops on various topics and receptions will be scheduled throughout the week at various UCSF locations. Faculty Welcoming Week is targeted for junior faculty members up to the assistant professor III level and all faculty members who have come to UCSF within the past two years. Faculty Welcoming Week is one of the Chancellor's Council on Faculty Life's initiatives to create a supportive work environment for faculty. As noted in the 2003 report by the Chancellor's Task Force on the Climate for Faculty: "The welcoming that faculty members receive after arriving at UCSF can influence their professional experience here for many years." "It is critical that we address this challenge so that all new faculty members feel welcomed and supported," says Sally Marshall, associate vice chancellor of Academic Affairs. Additional details and updated information are available on the Academic Affairs website.
