UCSF to Host Fifth Annual Safety Fair

The UCSF Police Department is sponsoring its fifth annual Public Safety Fair, which is being held in conjunction with National Preparedness Month in September and National Crime Prevention Month in October. The fairs will be held at the following locations:
  • Mission Center Building: Thursday, Sept. 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Parnassus campus, Saunders Court, Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Mission Bay campus, Genentech Hall and Koret Quad, Thursday, Oct. 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
These fairs offer an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to meet police officers and others who work to help make UCSF a safer place to study and work. The public safety fair also will offer a variety of safety resources and information, including personal, identity, emergency preparedness and security. As an added feature, this year's safety fair includes a "dunk tank." Several members from the UCSF community have kindly volunteered their time to sit perilously above the tank waiting for someone to take aim. "So practice your aim, bring some ducats, and knock someone into the bucket," says Mike Sorenson, a member of the UCPD's crime prevention unit. The dunk tank will be at the Parnassus and Mission Bay fairs. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the UCSF Children's Hospital Child Life Department, which helps programs like Little Wishes continue. Donations and pledges also will be accepted on behalf of these volunteers by contacting the Child Life Department at 415/353-1203. Returning to the safety fairs again this year is McGruff, the Crime Dog, who will make appearances at each of the fairs from noon to 1 p.m. Participating organizations at the fairs include the UCSF Police Department, American Red Cross, US Postal Service, UCSF Environmental Health & Safety, UCSF Information Security Services and National Bike Registry. In addition, members of the campus community can pick up free giveaways with a safety theme or message and enter to win raffle prizes, including earthquake kits, T-shirts and bicycle equipment. A raffle drawing will be held after the last fair. Employees do not have to be present to win. Food will be available for purchase. An emergency preparedness fair is being developed and planned for October 2006. More details will be released in the future. For more information, please call UCSF Crime Prevention at 415/502-9396.
