UCSF Recognizes Nurse for Extraordinary Care

Janice Marchi-Varlow, a Cardiovascular Thoracic nurse, was named a winner of the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses for the month of August. Kathy Walton a Clinical Nurse on the unit nominated Marchi-Varlow for the award for the extraordinary compassion and caring she gave to a son whose mother was dying. "She made a very difficult situation much easier for everyone involved and most importantly gave the patient's son the strength and encouragement to start his journey through the grieving process," said Walton. Marchi-Varlow began her nursing career at UCSF as a new graduate nurse in 1986 on the Cardiovascular Unit. She is known for her professional expertise and warm and caring demeanor with patients, families and staff.

The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's program to recognize the "superhuman efforts nurses perform every day." The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation, based in Glen Ellen, CA, was established by J. Mark Barnes and his family in memory of his son J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopeniz purpura or ITP, a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. The UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children's Hospital are among 25 hospitals nationwide participating in the program, which issues a monthly award for extraordinary nurses at each hospital.
