Meetings to Address Denton Tragedy

Meetings are planned for tomorrow and July 5 to discuss the recent death of UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Denice Denton, PhD. First, the UCSF Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues is hosting a meeting tomorrow, Friday, June 30, at noon in Toland Hall for members of the UCSF GLBT community. And second, the UCSF Chancellor's Council on Faculty Life is sponsoring a meeting on Wednesday, July 5, at noon in the Clinical Sciences Building, room C 701, for the entire campus community. "Many of us in the UCSF community have been deeply grieved by the recent death of UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Denice Denton," Chancellor Mike Bishop, MD, said in an email message to the campus community. "As you may know, the media has reported her death as a suicide, which adds another layer to the pain of her loss. In response to this event, I would like to invite you to participate in informational discussion sessions arranged for the upcoming week. It is my hope that these meetings will help us address this tragedy." Bishop noted, "It is important during times like these that we take a moment to reflect, to come together, to help ourselves -- and each other -- to make meaning from tragedy. Our hearts go out to all those who were touched by Chancellor Denton and who now suffer her loss."
