Police Arrest Past President of Mount Zion Auxiliary

UCSF Police, assisted by San Francisco District Attorney's Office investigators, arrested Gary Freund, 59, at his home in San Francisco today (May 24), according to UCSF Police Chief Pamela Roskowski. The arrest was the culmination of a 22-month investigation conducted by the UCSF Police Department into allegations of forgery and grand theft of about $166,000 in charitable funds from the Auxiliary at UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion, UCSF police say. Freund was booked by UCSF Police into the San Francisco County Jail on 30 felony charges, including grand theft and forgery. Freund was president of the Auxiliary at UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion during the time of the alleged grand theft and forgeries. His affiliation with the auxiliary ended around June 2004. The Auxiliary at UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion, founded in 1987, is a volunteer and philanthropic organization. Its mission is to support the well-being of patients at UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion, by providing financial support for programs and services that otherwise would not be available. A separate, independent 501(c)3 organization, the auxiliary assists in promoting the health and welfare of the medical center's patients through volunteerism, community relations and philanthropy. It provides financial assistance to support the health needs of indigent patients and supports other activities that advance the mission of the hospital. Major activities of the Mount Zion auxiliary include operating a gift shop and sponsoring one or two fund raising events each year. Anyone with additional information about these alleged crimes is requested to contact UCSF Police Detective Mikky Sidher at 415/476-6890. Links: UCSF Police
