Experts to Offer Free Child Development Screening This Sunday

UCSF clinician-volunteers will provide free developmental and behavioral screening this Sunday, April 2 at the "See Me" family festival for young children. The free festival will be held rain or shine on Sunday, April 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Civic Center Plaza, which is located on Polk Street between McAllister and Grove streets. Mary Coleman, MD, MPH, an assistant clinical professor of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at UCSF, will join the High Risk Infant Interagency Council Ages and Stages Project of San Francisco and other clinicians from the Department of Pediatrics at San Francisco General Hospital to offer free screenings for children. The UCSF team will use survey tools to assess children's developmental and behavioral progress in fine motor skills, speech and language, problem-solving skills and social and emotional demeanor. Sponsored by First 5 San Francisco, the free event is part of the Week of the Young Child festivities. The day also features sing-along children's songs, hands-on activities, storytelling, dance performances, and obstacle courses and jumpers. See the flyer here (pdf). First 5 San Francisco is part of the statewide First 5 California movement to assist public agencies, nonprofit organizations and parent groups in nurturing early education, pediatric health care, systems change and family support. UCSF also will celebrate the Week of the Young Child with the Sixth Annual Children's Art Show, scheduled from April 3 through April 15, and a free family movie screening at Cole Hall Cinema on the Parnassus campus on Sunday, April 2.
