Staff Can Apply for Mission Bay Housing for Limited Time

Full-time career employees at UCSF may apply to live at the new housing complex at the Mission Bay campus now through June 2006. Mission Bay Housing, totaling 431 apartments, was completed in November 2005. But due to construction delays, the project missed its original opening date, sending its targeted tenants - students - looking elsewhere for housing. Now, with the housing occupancy rate at Mission Bay under projection, UCSF has an opportunity to address an important, unmet need of the campus - staff housing, says Senior Vice Chancellor Steve Barclay. "Providing housing for staff has always been a part of the UCSF 1997 [Long Range Development Plan] goals," Barclay notes. "We have not been able to address this goal due to competing priority for student housing. With the current short-term excess capacity, and in support of the campus's overall recruitment and retention efforts, we have an opportunity to offer some available student housing until long-term solutions are identified." Application for this program is open from March through June 2006. Staff will be eligible to live at Mission Bay Housing through June 2009. Future application opening dates will be subject to space availability. Students, postdocs, resident interns and faculty will continue to be able to rent units on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, Housing Services has set aside a percentage of the total housing for interested students to ensure that their needs are met.
