Peggy Orenstein
The UCSF Center for Gender Equity, the Student Activity Center and the International Museum of Women present "Women's Lives in Flux: Love and Relationships in a Half Changed World, a Conversation with Peggy Orenstein" on Wednesday, March 8.
The event is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. in Health Sciences West, room 300, on the UCSF Parnassus campus.
The campus community is invited to hear Peggy Orenstein, author of
"Flux: Women on Sex, Work, Love, Kids & Life In A Half-Changed World", as she shares what it means to be a woman at the beginning of this century. After talking to more than 200 women between the ages of 25 and 45, Orenstein shares their thoughts on ambition and power, the experience of sex and love, the meaning of motherhood, what it means to remain single and childless, and how these things influence the way we live.
In this session, Orenstein will briefly share those insights from her research and then will invite the audience to have an open dialogue on:
•
What does it mean to be a woman of today's generation?
•
How do we re-define the meaning of success and live a full, rich
life?
•
How do love, relationships and motherhood impact our personal
and professional goals?
•
How do we create positive change in our relationships, communities
and the world? |
Orenstein is an award-winning writer, editor and speaker about issues affecting girls and women. Her book Flux: Women on Sex, Work, Kids, Love and Life in a Half-Changed World examines the politics and psychology of women's life choices from their mid-20s through their mid-40s. Her best-selling book,
SchoolGirls: Young Women, Self-Esteem and the Confidence Gap, is an in-depth study of educational inequity and self-image conflicts among teenage girls in two diverse communities. A contributing writer to the New York Times Magazine, Orenstein has also written for such publications as Vogue, Glamour, Discover, Elle, Mother Jones, Salon and The New Yorker.
This program was created to support the launch on March 8 of a new anthology and online exhibit published by the
International Museum of Women, titled, Imagining Ourselves: A Global Generation of Women. The exhibit reaches out to a new global generation of women - the 1 billion women in their 20s and 30s - answering the question, "what defines your generation?" Through an interactive online exhibit, a series of global gatherings and a new book, Imagining Ourselves is a platform for young women to create positive change in their lives, communities and the world. the website.
Copies of both Flux and Imagining Ourselves will be available for sale after the March 8 event.
