UCSF Today is unveiling a new monthly column to introduce faculty who have recently joined the ranks at the University.

This new feature, a joint effort of the offices of Academic Affairs and Public Affairs, is part of a series of new initiatives to create a supportive work environment for faculty. The Academic Affairs office is also hosting welcome receptions and orientation programs for new faculty.
The idea to make new faculty feel welcome on a campus that spans multiple locations was among recommendations by the Chancellor's Task Force on Faculty Life. In its 170-page report issued in February 2003, the task force made 10 recommendations, including those calling for institutional welcoming of new faculty, departmental mentoring and cultivating leadership. Implementing these recommendations is the charge of the Chancellor's Council on Faculty Life (CCFL.)
Since being appointed associate vice chancellor for academic affairs last March, Sally Marshall, a professor in the UCSF School of Dentistry, has made it a priority to ensure that the CCFL implements the task force's recommendations. She serves as the point person for creating, implementing, and ensuring the success of programs to enhance faculty life, and directs the newly established Office of Faculty Development and Advancement.
Another new UCSF initiative, the Faculty Leadership Collaborative, began in January. Thirty two faculty members, most of them women, are spending 65 hours over a 10-week period participating in seminars and other activities designed to help prepare them for leadership positions. Next, the Academic Affairs office will launch a faculty-focused website that offers a one-stop webpage with links to critical campus and UC resources for academic appointees.
