Archive: Black Caucus Presents Tribute to Coretta Scott King Today
Doris Ward is the keynote speaker at a Black History Month celebration on Monday, Feb. 27 when she will give a tribute to the late Coretta Scott King.
The campus community is invited to hear the talk today at noon in the UCSF School of Nursing, room N 225. Ward's talk is titled "Taking the Dream Onward: A Tribute to Coretta Scott King."
The widow of Martin Luther King Jr., Mrs. King died Jan. 30 at the age 78 after battling ovarian cancer and the effects of a stroke. Her funeral drew thousands of people, including four US presidents, who came to honor her as a champion of human rights and advocate for peace and justice for all.
A long-time Bay Area public servant, Ward started her career in public office nearly 30 years ago as Trustee for the San Francisco Community College District. She became a County Supervisor in 1980, President of the Board of Supervisors in 1990 and spent the last 10 years as the San Francisco County Assessor before retiring. Ward is also a cancer survivor, who was treated at UCSF Medical Center. See that story here.
