Women's Global Health Imperative presents its sixth annual International Women's Day Briefing: Women, Poverty & HIV on Wednesday, March 8 at 5:30 p.m.
The event will be held at the War Memorial Veterans Building
401 Van Ness Avenue, second floor, San Francisco. Tickets are $100, $50, and $25 tickets or $35 at the door. Seating is limited.
The event features Stephen Lewis, United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa; Nancy Padian, PhD, executive director, Women's Global Health Imperative. Padian is also associate director for research, Global Health Sciences and director of International Programs for the AIDS Research Institute. She is also a professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences.
In addition, Rutendo Kashambwa, a young Zimbabwean woman, will speak about the challenges of growing up in Zimbabwe.
The Women's Global Health Imperative (WGHI) is a global research center based in the Global Health Sciences at UCSF. Its mission is to improve the reproductive health of vulnerable women around the globe by:
• Conducting rigorous collaborative research to strengthen the reproductive health program evidence base;
• Developing and evaluating public health interventions;
• Studying gender and economic inequity;
• Building international capacity;
• Providing training and mentoring opportunities.
WGHI pursues prevention through international operations. Currently, WGHI conducts over 20 research projects in the Dominican Republic, Egypt, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Tibet, the United States, and Zimbabwe. The distribution of its research reflects the fact that, in sub-Saharan Africa, more than 50 percent of those infected with HIV are women and girls.
