Campus Mourns Loss of Marcellus Martin
Longtime UCSF employee and dedicated friend and family man Marcellus Martin died on Oct. 24, 2005.
After working at the Bank of California for about four years, Martin joined the staff at UCSF in 1972, working first as controller in the Hospitals and Clinics division until 2001. After a two-year separation from the University, he returned to UCSF in 2003 for two years as a facilities support services financial officer in the Design and Construction department. He retired from that department in September 2005.
Martin dedicated his life to his work and family and friends. He was a gourmet cook, and especially enjoyed providing an annual New Year's Day dinner, which he prepared and which brought family and many friends together to get the new year off to a good start. He had an extraordinary sense of humor and quick wit. Among some of the activities that brought him joy and entertainment were watching football and basketball and reading works of many authors.
He was born the second of twins to Smith Edward and Helen Marie Martin on Sept. 3, 1945, in Denver, Colorado. He attended Denver Public Schools, graduating from East High and received his BS degree in accounting at the University of Colorado. Martin became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He later spent two years in the Army Reserve, and moved to Oakland, where he lived and worked for more than 37 years. He met and married Carolyn Simmons in San Francisco, and from this union was born Kia Marie Martin.
Martin was preceded in death by his twin brother, Morris martin; father, Smith Edward Martin, and his uncles, Christopher and Charles Martin.
He is survived by his mother, Helen Martin; his daughter, Kia Martin, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Martin would like to be remembered as a fun-loving person who was always giving, honest, fair and fiercely loyal to his family and friends.
