Campus to Celebrate Life of Henry Goldberg on Nov. 18
The campus community is invited to celebrate the life and career of Henry Goldberg, UCSF professor of radiology, who died September 20 after a long illness.
Goldberg was an internationally recognized authority in abdominal and gastrointestinal radiology.
A campus memorial in his honor and the dedication of the Henry I. Goldberg Center for Advanced Imaging Education is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. in the School of Nursing building, room N 225, on the Parnassus campus. Goldberg was a productive researcher who authored more than 160 manuscripts and 51 book chapters as well as two CD ROM programs, a web-based syllabus and online CME programs.
Goldberg's UCSF career began in 1967. From 1968 to 1970, he served as staff radiologist at the Walter Reed General Hospital and assistant clinical professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He returned to UCSF in 1970 and served on the radiology faculty for the next 35 years. He was vice chairman of postgraduate education in the department from 1984-1998, and was director of the Radiology Learning Center from 1994-2005.
"Hank has been an icon in radiology for many years," said Ron Arenson, chair of the Department of Radiology. "His early work in gastrointestinal radiology and later his emphasis on teaching, especially medical students, earned him a reputation of excellence at everything he touched. His charming personality and smiling face, his almost always upbeat attitude, and his strong desire to contribute in meaningful ways to others around him garnered him friends everywhere."
Goldberg was a founding member of the Society of Computed Body Tomography, a small prestigious society composed of leaders in abdominal radiology, and he served as president of the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists. He was awarded the Walter B. Cannon Medal from the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists in 1997, the society's highest award.
He also received the UCSF Department of Radiology Outstanding Alumni Award in 1997 and a Clinical Teaching Award from the graduating medical students in the classes of 1999, 2001 and 2003. He was awarded the RSNA Outstanding Educator Award in 2004, given annually to recognize and honor one individual who has made original and significant contributions to radiology throughout their career. He was also a charter member of the School of Medicine Academy of Medical Educators.
Goldberg served his profession in the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, the Association of University Radiologists, the American Medical Association, the San Francisco Radiological Society and the Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.
He is survived by his wife Jan and children Debra Goldberg, Lara Gremmels and Steven Goldberg, brother Robert Goldberg and grandchildren Cameron Gremmels and Michael Goldberg.
