Panelists to Discuss Opportunities with Doctors Without Borders Today

UCSF will host two panel presentations on "Volunteering with Doctors Without Borders" on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The presentations will be held at noon and at 6 p.m. in the Health Sciences West (HSW) building, room HSW 301, on the Parnasssus campus. Food will be served. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is in urgent need of medical and nonmedical personnel to provide medical aid and assistance to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, or exclusion from health care in nearly 70 countries. With the devastation wrought by the recent earthquake in Pakistan -- reportedly the worst in a century -- the demand for medical care is greater than ever. The campus community is invited to join Tom Novotny, MD, MPH, director of International Programs, UCSF School of Medicine, and MSF volunteers to discuss how they balance their work overseas with their careers back home. Speakers also include: Benjamin Wan, MD, who supervised the medical care in a camp with 50,000 people displaced by war in Liberia and oversaw an ambulatory therapeutic feeding unit, which served people who fled from violence in Darfur, Sudan. Candace Becker, RN-midwife, MPH, who worked in a hospital and several clinics attending to the maternal health needs of women in Burundi, where civilians live without health care or with little access to it. Molly Sweeny, RN, who, after volunteering with MSF in Abkhazia, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Nigeria, joined the Field Human Resources department to recruit volunteers. Co-sponsored by UCSF Career Center, the event is free, wheelchair-accessible, and open to the public.
