UCSF Exhibit Focuses on Mother-Daughter Relationships

The UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women's Health is partnering with the International Museum of Women to present an exhibit and related programs exploring mother-daughter relationships. The campus community is invited to the exhibit, titled "Generations: A Tribute to Mothers and Daughters Around the World," which opens Thursday, Sept. 15, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the UCSF Women's Health Center, 2356 Sutter St., first floor, San Francisco. The "Generations" exhibit is a thought-provoking photographic and film exploration of the complex relationship between mothers and daughters. This exhibit features 15 mother-daughter pairs from culturally diverse backgrounds. Striking black-and-white portraits of mothers and daughters are merged into a single image. The photographs will be displayed alongside a documentary in which the mothers and daughters speak honestly about their relationships. The exhibit is open to the public weekdays through Thursday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Women's Health Center at the Mount Zion campus. In conjunction with the exhibit, the UCSF Women's Health Center is offering a rich program of free, weekly community events. These events also are free and open to the public: * Thursday, Sept. 22: Authors Dorothy Allison, Jewelle Gomez and Deborah Santana will read from their books and sign them from 5 to 7 p.m. * Thursday, Sept. 29: "Generations" Curator Rachael Holton will speak, followed by a "Generations" mother-daughter panel discussion from 5 to 7 p.m. * Thursday, Oct. 6: UCSF geneticist Mary Beattie will give a lecture at noon. Community Outreach The exhibit is the latest effort by UCSF to advance women's health in part by building partnerships and relationships with the community. UCSF, one of the original six institutions to receive national designation as a center of excellence in women's health, also works to promote an extensive women's health research agenda, to educate tomorrow's health care providers about the principles of women's health and to pave the way for women to hold leadership positions at UCSF. We are delighted to partner with the International Museum of Women on this evocative exhibit, which takes a compelling look at the multifaceted connections between mothers and daughters around the world," said Nancy Milliken, MD, director of the National Center of Excellence in Women's Health and vice dean of the School of Medicine. "Through this exhibit and the associated educational series, our goal is to enhance the health of women and girls in diverse communities and across the life span." The photographs are by award-winning photographer Rodney Lough Jr. With the death of his grandmother, Lough was inspired to celebrate the lives of the strong women in his life and around the world through the art of photography. "In a single image of mother and daughter, I have sought to capture the passing of time, the solidarity of maternal love and the striking similarity that transcends generations," Lough explains. In the "Generations" documentary, mothers and daughters talk about hardships and moments of pride, fond memories, passed down traits and how their relationships have evolved. Mothers compare the relationship with their daughters to the relationship with their own mothers and discuss the challenge of raising daughters in a culture different from the ones in which they were raised. The documentary was created by Rachael Holton and Cherisma Faril, both artists from the San Francisco Bay Area, and was edited by Vivian Rogers. Holton's vision for "Generations" was seeded in her own admiration and love for her mother. She seeks to convey the powerful bond between mother and daughter. "My hope is that Generations will be a mirror for people around the world to see themselves and relate on a transformational level in their own relationships and lives." "Generations" is made possible with the support of the African-American Museum & Library at Oakland and other International Museum of Women partners.
