Harvey Brody
Harvey Brody, DDS, clinical professor emeritus, UCSF School of Dentistry, was honored recently as the 2005 Coach of Life by the Omega Boys Club for his work with troubled San Francisco youth.
Brody was selected by the club's alumni to receive the Wilbur L. Jiggetts Jr. Coach of Life Award, named after a City College of San Francisco coach who devoted much of his life to helping young men stay or get on the right path.
Brody, who is also clinical professor emeritus in the School of Dentistry's Department of Stomatology, has been a volunteer at Omega Boys Club's Institutional Violence Prevention Program for more than 10 years. The program operates at the Youth Guidance Center in the San Francisco County Jail, where Brody works with incarcerated boys, showing them the consequences of the decisions they make and suggesting healthy alternatives.
Brody has even helped several young men find work at UCSF via the Temporary Employment Program, which provides entry-level jobs and opportunities to learn skills that could lead to better and full-time work.
Last year, Brody was appointed to serve as director of the Faculty Search Ambassador Program to help UCSF search committees attract diverse pools of outstanding faculty candidates.
Brody has authored 45 articles, addressed national and international meetings, and received numerous honors and awards, including a congressional commendation from the 104th US Congress. He was honored as the Omega Boys and Girls Club Man of the Year for 2000.
Throughout his career, Brody has been active in initiating successful programs to increase diversity in the health professions. In 1997, he helped establish the UCSF Postbaccalaureate Program for the School of Dentistry. The program assists students from disadvantaged backgrounds to gain admission to dental school.
The Omega Boys Club strives to give young men and women the opportunity to build positive lives and to become productive citizens in society.
