National Research Advocate to Discuss Future of Medical Research on July 6

Mary Woolley

Mary Woolley, one of the nation's most influential spokespeople on the importance of medical research in modern life, will present a talk about the future of medical research at the J. David Gladstone Institutes on Wednesday, July 6. Taking place at 11 a.m. in Gladstone's Robert Mahley Auditorium, this lecture promises to be a thought-provoking look at some of the key public health questions today. President of the Virginia-based Research!America for the last 15 years, Woolley will talk about the relationship between medical research and the health care crisis and the increasing role of biotech in general and medical research in particular as economic engines for leading cities of the future. She will discuss whether increased funding of medical research can ameliorate such critical issues as a growing uninsured population, skyrocketing medical care costs and uncertainty about Medicare's future. Under her leadership, Research!America has been one of the pivotal forces behind increased federal funding for medical research and has worked to foster effective collaboration among the nation's government, industry, academic and philanthropic research sectors. Research!America's public opinion polls on attitudes toward funding of medical research, published in Parade and other outlets, have proven to be highly effective tools for convincing legislators that there is indeed wide support for research in America today. A native of Chicago, Woolley received a Bachelor of Science from Stanford University and a Master of Arts from San Francisco State University. She studied advanced management at UC Berkeley.
