The UCSF School of Dentistry recently completed its accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA), receiving many commendations and not a single recommendation.
The CDA, which operates under the auspices of the American Dental Association, performs accreditation site visits of all US dental schools every seven years.
The accreditation team concluded its work on April 14 and immediately thereafter the chair of the accreditation committee, Bruce Graham, dean of the College of Dentistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago, debriefed UCSF officials. Chancellor Mike Bishop, Executive Vice Chancellor Eugene Washington, Charles N. Bertolami, dean of the dental school and the school's administrators were on hand to receive the good news.
In the draft report from the CDA, the UCSF School of Dentistry received zero recommendations and 17 commendations for the pre-doctoral program and the six post-graduate programs that were reviewed.
This is a singular accomplishment for the entire organization, faculty, staff, and students, Bertolami says.
"These positive results are something that we can all be proud of, as they reflect well on all of us and the common mission that we hold," he said. "I would like to thank the faculty, staff and students for all of their hard work preparing this institution for the Accreditation process. The entire administration and I couldn't be happier with their findings, which far exceeded what we could have hoped for."
Bertolami extended special thanks to Dorothy Perry, associate dean for education.
"Dr. Perry led the accreditation effort, working tirelessly over the past two-and-a-half years, meeting with faculty, staff and students, preparing thousands of pages of documentation for review by the site team, helping to mobilize the school in preparation for the event and keeping us all apprised of the process."
