Two Faculty Members Win Top Teaching Award

Tracy B. Fulton, PhD, and Martin S. Bogetz, MD, will be honored on April 28 for winning the 2004-2005 UCSF Distinction in Teaching Awards. The award is given to two exemplary UCSF faculty members each year in two categories. Category one awards a teacher who has been with UCSF less than five years, category two to a teacher who has been with UCSF for five years or more. Fulton, associate adjunct professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, is winner in category one. Bogetz, professor of clinical anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, is the winner in category two. To select each year's recipients, the UCSF Academic Senate Committee on Academic Personnel designates a selection committee made up of faculty and student representatives from all four schools. The Academic Senate will honor this year's recipients at a ceremony during Founder's Week on Thursday, April 28, from noon to 1 p.m. in Cole Hall, Medical Sciences Building, 513 Parnassus Ave. The event is open to the campus community. Winners' teaching styles, skills Fulton joined the faculty at UCSF in 2000. She has been the co-director of the Prologue Block, the Metabolism & Nutrition Block (interdisciplinary courses organized around central themes or systems) and the Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellowship Program. A leader in curriculum design, she created the new Metabolism and Nutrition course first offered in 2002. She is often cited for her lively and compelling biochemistry prologue courses. And, in an era of PowerPoint lectures, Fulton engages her students with the old-school methods of blackboard and colored chalks. Among her achievements while at UCSF: • In 2004, elected to the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators • In 2004, honored with the Commitment to Teaching award given by the UCSF School of Medicine Class of 2006 Bogetz first came to UCSF in 1981 as a clinical fellow in anesthesia and traumatic injury. He was appointed to the UCSF faculty in 1982. His achievements while at UCSF include: • Founding member of the School of Medicine's Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators • The Excellence in Teaching award from the Medical School Class of 2003 • The Residents' Award for Excellence in Teaching from periodontal residents in 1998 • Several nominations for the Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching, among other teaching awards In addition to his teaching, research, and clinical responsibilities, Bogetz participates on numerous faculty and Academic Senate committees. He also volunteers his time as a member of the executive board of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, where he was named Volunteer of the Year for Northern California in 1992.
