Donna Ferriero
Donna Ferriero, professor of neurology and pediatrics, has been appointed vice dean for academic affairs in the School of Medicine.
The appointment, effective Feb. 1, was announced recently by David Kessler, dean of the School of Medicine.
Ferriero, who also directs the Neonatal Brain Disorder Center and the Division of Child Neurology, has served as associate dean for academic affairs since October. Ferriero, who graduated from the School of Medicine in 1979, joined the UCSF faculty in 1987. She chairs the Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Women, is former chair of the Committee on Academic Personnel and is a member of the Chancellor's Council on Faculty Life.
She succeeds Neal Cohen, who has served as vice dean for academic affairs since 2000. He will assume a new position as vice dean responsible for international medical services, risk management, compliance and related special projects.
Kessler also announced that Renee Binder, professor in residence of psychiatry, and Renee Navarro, clinical professor of anesthesia and perioperative care, will continue in their roles as associate deans for academic affairs.
Binder, who directs the Psychiatry and the Law Program and recently returned from Washington, DC, where she worked with the US Senate on health policy, will focus on legal and government issues. Navarro, who also serves as medical director of Perioperative Services at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center and chairs a diversity task force, will focus on recruitment and retention.
"Drs. Binder, Ferriero and Navarro bring a deep understanding of the diverse experiences of UCSF faculty to their Academic Affairs office roles and responsibilities," said Kessler. "Their commitment to faculty development and advancement will enhance the merit and promotion process within the School of Medicine."
