UCSF offers Bay Area parents and students a chance to "Plan on College"
UCSF’s Center for Science Education and Outreach will welcome more than 500 eighth-grade students and parents to “Plan on College!” on May 3. This one-day event is designed to provide resources and encouragement to San Francisco and Daly City families unfamiliar with college preparation and admissions procedures.
“It’s important to get students thinking about college as they enter high school,” said Center director Tracy Stevens. “Current college entrance requirements call for students to make informed course choices beginning in ninth grade in order to be eligible by the time they graduate.”
Information sessions for parents will be conducted in English, Spanish, and Cantonese. Students and parents wishing to attend may register online at:

Parent sessions on California’s higher-education systems, how to prepare a child for college, and how financial aid programs work
-Student sessions on California’s higher-education systems and course requirements for UC and CSU admissions. Also, a panel of high school students will talk about making the transition to high school.
11:15 - 12:00 Small group meetings with counselors from each area public high school and staff members from community-based education access programs.
12:00 - 1:00 Lunch and Information Fair
The Center encourages elementary, middle, and high school students from the San Francisco Bay Area to pursue higher education. The Center coordinates programs that help students explore academic interests, prepare academically for college, learn how to apply to and finance college, and decide which colleges best fit their academic goals.
Center programs include: informational conferences about college; bus trips to University of California campuses for tours and workshops; field trips to museums, laboratories, and other educational sites; summer science academies offering science and math classes; and hands-on science experiences.
The programs are developed in collaboration with counselors, teachers, and administrators of the San Francisco Unified and Jefferson Union school districts.
