Joycelyn Elders to speak at UCSF on Women's Reproductive Rights

Former US Surgeon General M. Joycelyn Elders, MD, will present a talk on women’s reproductive rights on Tuesday, December 3 at 9 am at UCSF in HSW 300. Elders, now a distinguished professor of public health at the University of Arkansas, was sworn into office in September of 1993 as the first African American woman to be named Surgeon General.

As Surgeon General, Elders argued the case for universal health coverage and was a spokesperson for President Clinton’s health care reform effort. Outspoken in her views, she resigned after 15 months when a controversy persisted about one of her public statements about sex education.

Elders will present the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences’ third annual Edward C. Hill, MD, Endowed Lecture.
