UCSF sponsors "Take Our Daughters to Work"

UCSF Public Service Programs expects more than 425 youngsters at Take Our Daughters to Work Day, 2002 on Thursday, April 25 from 8:30-11:45 am.  Both
daughters and sons have enrolled in the campus-wide program sponsored by the Department of Public Affairs with contributions from the UCSF Center for Gender Equity, UCSF Medical Center and the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and the Graduate Division.

The free program is celebrating its 10th year anniversary by the Ms. Foundation and is booked to capacity at UCSF.  This year, events will include:

* In Dentistry—-putting on gowns, gloves and masks to take an impression of teeth;
* An Anatomy experience with microscopes; viewing slides of sliced brains with electron microscopes and learning how to do skull examinations;
* In the Intensive Care Nursery, youngsters will see tiny babies and learn about warmers and isolettes, how to set-up up blood pressure cuffs and monitors.
*Learning about earthquakes and disaster preparedness, planning for fire safety and using a fire extinguisher from the UCSF Environmental Health and Safety department.

Lynn Ponton, MD, UCSF professor of psychiatry and chair of the UCSF Take Our Daughters to Work Day is a national expert with more than 20 years working with children and adolescents.  “This day offers our children unique opportunities, including participating in a mock operation, visiting labor and delivery rooms and conducting laboratory experiments.  Most important is the time we spend with them, connecting and encouraging their interests.”

Following the morning program, there will be a free pizza lunch in Millberry Union Gym, 500 Parnassus Ave.  The UCSF Black Student Health Alliance will host its annual cultural show, AfroFusion, as part of the lunch entertainment.
