Robert A. Nissenson, PhD, to receive award from Bone And Mineral Society

On Tuesday, October 19, 2010, San Francisco VA Medical Center bone researcher and former NCIRE Board of Directors member Robert A. Nissenson, PhD, will receive the 2010 Shirley Hohl Service Award from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR).

Dr. Nissenson, a Senior Research Career Scientist at SFVAMC and a Professor of Medicine and Physiology at the University of California, San Francisco, will be presented with the award at the ASBMR annual meeting in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Nissenson is a past president of the Society, which brings together over 4,000 clinical and experimental scientists involved in the study of bone and mineral metabolism.  Dr. Nissenson’s work focuses on identifying new pathways to activate osteoblasts - the cells that make new bone - in order to more effectively treat osteoporosis (loss of bone density with age) and to accelerate fracture repair.

The Shirley Hohl Service Award is given to an individual whose activities best represent the dedicated and unselfish devotion in service to the ASBMR and its mission and goals as exemplified by Shirley Hohl, the ASBMR’s founding Executive Secretary. The award, which is presented to an individual who is recognized by members of the Society as having made significant contributions to the mission of the ASBMR, includes an honorarium and award plaque recognizing the awardee’s contributions.

NCIRE-The Veterans Health Research Institute - is a self-funded private nonprofit research institute, established to administer health research at SFVAMC. It is the largest research institute associated with a VA medical center in the United States. NCIRE’s mission is to advance Veterans health through research.
