Patricia Calarco

In a letter to the campus community, UCSF Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Eugene Washington, MD, has announced the appointment of Patricia Calarco, PhD, as Dean of the Graduate Division. The full text of the letter follows: Dear Colleagues: With great pleasure, I write to announce the appointment of Professor Patricia Calarco as Dean of the Graduate Division. Professor Calarco is an accomplished administrator and developmental biologist with an excellent record of scholarly achievement who has served the UCSF community in several capacities over the past years. She is a professor in the Department of Anatomy where her successful research program focused on the development and differentiation of the early mammalian embryo, oocytes, and stem cells. While maintaining an active research program, she advanced to the position of Associate Dean, Graduate Division, in January 1998 and served as Interim Dean from November 2005 until her new appointment. As Dean, Graduate Division, Professor Calarco will be responsible for the administrative oversight of graduate degree programs, graduate admissions, student support programs, and academic review of graduate programs. She will also have administrative responsibility for postdoctoral scholars. As well, she will oversee a variety of outreach and diversity programs aimed to increase the participation of underrepresented persons in the graduate health sciences. Finally, Dean Calarco will work with the deans of the four professional schools in creating and successfully implementing programs to enhance graduate student and postdoctoral scholar life, and improve academic enrichment and translational science programs. Professor Calarco's strong record as an educational administrator, her extensive scientific knowledge, and her diverse experience in graduate evaluation amply qualify her for this important post. She has held progressively responsible academic and administrative positions with the University of California. She has over 12 years in graduate education starting in 1995 when she was appointed as a Fellow by the American Council on Education where she studied at the University of Boston in the Office of the President. She has helped improve of the quality of services for students and scholars by serving on committees for the Office of Admissions and Registrar, and the Services to International Students and Scholars Office. In addition, she has chaired the UC system-wide steering committee for the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate, and recently served on the UCSF Strategic Planning Board. Professor Calarco is assuming this key leadership role at a critical time for graduate education, locally and nationally, particularly in the Life Sciences. I believe her demonstrated ability and commitment will help ensure the continued success of our already exceptional graduate students and postdoctoral scholars programs. I ask that you give Pat your enthusiastic support. A. Eugene Washington, M.D.
