Wanted: Donations to the San Francisco Food Bank

Faculty and staff are encouraged to bring in canned foods and staples such as beans, rice and pasta to help put food on the table for San Francisco's hungry. Food that is collected will help the San Francisco Food Bank supply meals to more than 600 food programs operated by partnering community service agencies and food pantries throughout the city that serve low-income families, senior citizens and other individuals in need. The following are some shocking facts about hunger in San Francisco: * 150,000 San Franciscans live with the threat of going hungry at some time during the month. * Children are one of the highest risk groups. An astonishing one in four children in San Francisco does not get enough food to meet nutritional needs. * Less than 20 percent of the people receiving food assistance are homeless. The majority of people receiving food assistance are working poor households whose incomes do not stretch far enough to put food on the table every day of the month. The San Francisco Food Bank particularly needs the following items: canned tuna, fish, meat, peanut butter, soups, stews and chili, canned fruits and vegetables, 100 percent fruit juices, beans, rice and pasta. To help, please drop off nonperishable food in the green food bank barrels located in the Laurel Heights lobby entrance during the drive. The food drive is organized by the Center for Health and Community, which is headquartered at UCSF Laurel Heights. Those who would like to donate to the cause can send checks to the San Francisco Food Bank, 900 Pennsylvania Ave., San Francisco, CA 94107. For every $1 donated, the Food Bank can distribute $9 worth of food to the community. Related Link: San Francisco Food Bank
