UCSF Medical Center names new Chief Nursing Officer

Sheila Antrum, RN, MSHA, has been named the new chief nursing and patient care services officer for UCSF Medical Center.
As chief, Antrum will oversee the administration of the Department of Nursing and have overall responsibility for nursing practice provided within the organization, including UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus and at Mount Zion, UCSF Children’s Hospital, Home Care and Ambulatory Services. In addition to nursing services, she also will serve on the medical center’s Executive Medical Board and participate in other medical center committees and taskforces.
“We selected Sheila for her proven track record in working across disciplines and bringing new approaches to improving patient care inside academic medical centers,” said Mark Laret, CEO of UCSF Medical Center. “We believe in her ability to build and strengthen ties between nursing and other clinical departments within UCSF.”
Antrum’s association with UCSF Medical Center began in 1986 when she was first hired as a clinical nurse in the coronary care unit. She has worked in various senior administrative roles for the medical center, including project manager of Operations, administrative director of Customer Service and Patient Satisfaction, and assistant director of Support Services and Planning.
More recently, Antrum has served as chief of Ambulatory Operations at the UCSD Medical Center where she was responsible for operations, quality and fiscal management of all medical group and hospital based clinics, including facilities, resource scheduling and ambulatory clinical system deployment.
Antrum earned her bachelor of science in nursing from the Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia, and her masters in health services administration from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor. She has worked as a floor nurse and intensive care nurse at some of the nation’s leading hospitals including, Yale University Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Antrum is a member of several associations including the Medical Management Association and the University HealthSystem Consortium Ambulatory Care Steering Committee.

Antrum replaces Catherine Wittenberg, former chief nursing officer and executive director of Nursing and Patient Care Services, who retired this year. “I am very honored and excited to return to UCSF where clinical excellence is demonstrated in nursing practice and caring,” said Antrum.
Antrum’s annual compensation will be $250,000.
The Department of Nursing at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children’s Hospital is at the forefront of innovation in patient care, implementing the latest evidence-based nursing practice on behalf of patients.
