Campus Announces AIDS Walk Early Bird Prize Winners and T-Shirt Design Winner

Jim Lowry, a retiree from the audit department, and Tibby Storey have tied as the "Early Bird" fundraisers for this year's AIDS Walk. Both had raised $1,300 by the June 15 deadline. Lowry will receive a $100 gift certificate to Best Buy, donated by Campus Arts and Events. Storey will receive a $100 gift certificate to Coco 500, donated by University Advancement and Planning. Lena Morita, a typesetter in the Documents, Media and Mail (DMM) unit, part of Campus Life Services, has been named the winner of the UCSF AIDS Walk T-shirt design contest. Morita's design was selected among seven images submitted to the UCSF AIDS Walk Committee. The contest showcased the creative talents of those at UCSF. Honorable mention goes to these artists: * Judith Lao, pediatrics (last year's winner); * James Joves, School of Pharmacy Dean's Office; * Kathleen Lee, UCSF IRTS digital imaging; * Rachna Sharma, Department of Medicine; and * Lenelle Yapana, Campus Planning. Morita said she "wanted to create something upbeat and fun to capture the spirit of the walk." For her efforts, Morita will receive a $90 American Express gift certificate.
Morita previously worked in marketing for Japanese companies until she decided to explore more of her artistic side. She graduated with a certificate in graphic design from the College of San Mateo. She also was involved in the design of the 2007 calendar for DMM and she aspires to do more graphic design. Her other artistic pursuits include Japanese flower arranging and Japanese brush calligraphy. UCSF is encouraging faculty, staff and students to participate in the AIDS Walk San Francisco on Sunday, July 15 either by walking, sponsoring a walker or volunteering at the UCSF table on the day of the event. Volunteers are needed from about 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 15 to check in walkers, distribute food and T-shirts, and clean up. To sign up, or to refer someone who wants to volunteer, contact Joey Convento, Campus Life Services, at 415/476-2675. Last year, UCSF teams collectively raised $69,323. This year, the UCSF AIDS Walk Steering Committee has set a goal of $75,000. To date, online commitments have been made for $17,000, so UCSF has a long way to go to reach its goal.
