UCSF Academic Senate Names 2007-2009 Officers

The UCSF Academic Senate has announced its new slate of officers for 2007-2009. They are: * David Gardner, chair * Elena Fuentes-Afflick, vice chair * Mary Malloy, secretary * Jean Olson, parliamentarian The voice of the faculty in the University of California, the Academic Senate represents the faculty in the shared governance of the University. This responsibility is delegated by the UC Board of Regents and shared with the University administration, both at the campus level and systemwide.
David Gardner David Gardner, MD, is the Mount Zion Health Plan Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Osteoporosis at the Parnassus and Mount Zion campuses. A member of the UCSF community since 1979, Gardner now serves as vice chair of the UCSF Academic Senate. His laboratory research interests focus on the general area of cardiovascular endocrinology with a specific emphasis on hormonal regulation of growth and hypertrophy in the cardiovascular system. Gardner received his MS and MD degrees from the University of Rochester, completed his medical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and his endocrinology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. Gardner has served on numerous extramural committees and study sections. He has been elected to membership in the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians and as a Fellow of the AHA Council for High Blood Pressure Research. He currently serves as editor of the McGraw-Hill textbook "Greenspan's Basic and Clinical Endocrinology." Gardner has served as a member of the Committee on Academic Personnel and as member and chair of the Committee on Academic Planning and Budget.
Elena Fuentes-Afflick Elena Fuentes-Afflick, MD, MPH, is a professor of pediatrics and epidemiology and biostatistics. Her clinical appointment is at the UCSF-affiliated San Francisco General Hospital. Last year, Fuentes-Afflick was elected vice president of the prestigious national Society for Pediatric Research (SPR), one of the premier pediatric academic societies in the United States. She will advance to the role of president-elect later this year and will become president of SPR in 2008. Fuentes-Afflick's academic research includes studies that found that the interval between pregnancies can affect the health of the subsequent baby (1998); a study of the risk factors for infant mortality in Latina women (2000) and a recent study of the impact of welfare reform on use of prenatal care among Latina women (2006). Fuentes-Afflick chairs the Committee on Committees and serves as the UCSF representative to the University Committee on Committees. She graduated from the University of Michigan medical school and completed her residency and chief residency in pediatrics at UCSF. Following her fellowship in health policy, she joined the UCSF faculty in 1993. Mary Malloy Mary Malloy, MD, professor of clinical medicine and pediatrics, is director of the Pediatric Lipid Clinic and co-director of the Adult Lipid Clinic. Her research is focused on the discovery of new genetic disorders of lipoproteins and the treatment thereof, and the genetic bases of heart disease and stroke. She is do-director of the UCSF Genomic Resource in Arteriosclerosis and a scientist at the UCSF Cardiovascular Research Institute. Malloy initiated the Pediatric Primary Care Residency Program and later contributed to the formation of the Division of Ambulatory and Community Medicine that became the department of Family Medicine. Malloy graduated from UC Berkeley and the UCSF School of Medicine. She completed her residency at the University of Washington in Seattle and at UCSF, where she has been on the faculty since 1967. She has served as a member and chair of the Clinical Affairs Committee. This is Malloy's second term as secretary of the Academic Senate. Jean Olson Jean Olson, MD, a professor of clinical pathology, has been a member of the campus community since 1994. Her chief clinical interest is in renal pathology and is on the autopsy service in the department. Her chief research interests are hypertension as it relates to renal injury and non-immune renal injury (fibrogenesis). A former member of Rules and Jurisdiction and UC Rules and Jurisdiction, Olson is entering her third term as parliamentarian for the UCSF Academic Senate.
