UCSF's Kahn Discusses Universal Health Care, Michael Moore's Film Sicko

A group of Californians rallied for universal health care in Sacramento on Tuesday, 6/12, as an informal hearing went on inside the Capitol with Michael Moore testifying for universal health care. Moore's new film Sicko advocates for universal healthcare via a single payer system, and getting rid of the health insurance industry. James Kahn, MD, MPH, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at UCSF's Institute for Health Policy Studies, agrees with Moore's stance. "We can't ever truly solve the problem of the uninsured and the underinsured... until we eliminate the private insurance companies who make a profit off our illness," Kahn told KPFA listeners. Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed the single payer bill introduced by Senator Sheila Kuehl. Kahn explains Kuehl's bill and other proposals by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata and the governor. Note: Kahn's interview begins around 11:25 into the broadcast.
