Nursing School Centennial Prompts UCSF Blood Drive

The UCSF School of Nursing has always pledged to help its local community. This year is no different. The nursing school is commemorating its centennial anniversary with a very special blood drive - "100 pints for 100 years" - to benefit the Blood Center at UCSF Medical Center. Spearheading this special blood drive is UCSF School of Nursing Dean Kathleen Dracup, RN, DNSc, who along with associate deans Zina Mirsky, RN, EdD, and Dorrie Fontaine, RN, DNSc, and administrative analyst Tony Lau, started by recently rolling up their own sleeves to donate the life saving liquid. Now that the word is spreading about the nursing school's noble cause, other members of the campus community are joining in to help commemorate 100 years of the School of Nursing. "Upon hearing of the School of Nursing's centennial blood drive, we decided that the School of Pharmacy should help celebrate their birthday too," said Mary Anne Koda-Kimble, PharmD, dean of the UCSF School of Pharmacy. "We felt the most meaningful way to do that was to launch our own 100 pints of blood drive among pharmacy students, faculty and staff. It's a heartfelt way to say congratulations to our nursing colleagues - and best of all, it benefits our patients." This special blood drive will be held for the next three months at the UCSF Blood Center, located in the Millberry Union Conference Center on the I level in room MU 09, 500 Parnasssus Ave. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Blood center staff members are appreciative of the nursing school's efforts, and are excited about the potential of others starting their own blood drives. "What's really exciting about more staff, students and faculty getting involved is that we have the potential to grow our base of regular, repeat blood donors right here among our own campus community," said Jean Katz, director of the UCSF Blood Center. "So many people want to volunteer their time for a good cause, but are just too busy to do so. Donating blood is a great way to make a contribution, and a person can give a general, random, or allogenic donation every eight weeks." The need for blood is very great, and faculty, staff and students are always encouraged to visit the blood center to donate blood. UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children's Hospital use more than 50,000 blood components a year, which translates to 100 each day. "Just 30 minutes of your time can save three lives," says Eric Jingles, a blood drive recruiter at UCSF. "We would like to thank the School of Nursing and the School of Pharmacy for their generous gifts of life!" Related Links: School of Nursing centennial UCSF Blood Center
