Campus Conducts Online Survey to Assess Child Care Needs

Parents and prospective parents are encouraged to participate in a quick online survey to help UCSF stay informed of changing child care needs in the campus community. "This is your opportunity to share your child care needs and experiences," says Diane Wara, MD, chair of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Child Care. "Your thoughtful responses will make a difference." The results of the 10-minute survey will be shared with UCSF campus administration and assist in developing short- and long-term goals for UCSF child care services and programs. While UCSF has expanded its child care program offerings, the campus currently has long wait lists for its child care centers. In April 2001, Chancellor Mike Bishop, MD, appointed a committee to oversee implementation of a campus child care policy, particularly as it relates to recruitment, retention and productivity of UCSF faculty, staff and students. The committee conducted a child care needs survey in 2002 which resulted in a 200 percent increase in enrollment slots at UCSF child care centers and the construction of two new child care centers, one at Mission Bay and one at Parnassus, with the opening of an infant care center at Parnassus planned for early 2008.

Launched on Jan. 9, the survey will assist the campus in further defining the evolving needs of UCSF families. Areas of documented growth could include recommendations for additional centers at the UCSF campuses and/or remote locations, such as the East Bay. Additionally, the committee is seeking information on alternate care options, including after-hours school programs, holiday and nontraditional hours of need programs and youth programs. Those who are a parent of a child under 16 years of age or plan to become a parent within the next two years are asked to please complete this survey in its entirety. All surveys will remain confidential unless respondents choose to identify themselves. The survey is posted here. Those with questions about the survey or current UCSF child care programs should contact Robert Frank, UCSF child care director, at 415/476-1469. Photo/Lisa Cisneros
