UCSF's Stem Cell Efforts Highlighted in The New York Times, Other Media

Arnold Kriegstein, MD, PhD, director of the UCSF Institute for Regeneration Medicine, spoke to the national and local press about a bill approved by the Senate Tuesday that would have expanded federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research. The House approved the same bill last year. President George Bush vetoed the bill Wednesday. In addition to The New York Times, Kriegstein spoke to NBC Nightly News, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Nature, Discovery News, AP radio, KGO-AM (ABC) radio and KPIX-TV (CBS 5) TV. He will participate in a call-in show on the topic Thursday on KQED-FM (88.5) radio's Forum with Michael Krasny. UCSF has been a pioneer of the human embryonic stem cell field from the outset. In 2001, it derived two of the first human embryonic stem cell lines, and has since derived 11 new stem cell lines. UCSF scientists are also carrying out somatic cell nuclear transfer, or therapeutic cloning, studies.
