UCSF AIDS Walk Contest Reaches Final Stretch

Last year's UCSF AIDS Walk team

With only days before the San Francisco AIDS Walk on Sunday, UCSF teams are doing what they can to raise dough. In fact, one team in particular is hosting a bake sale this Thursday. Those looking for something sweet to eat should stop by the bake sale table in front of the Millberry Union on July 13. Treats, including cookies and pies, will be on sale from 10:45 a.m. tp 1:15 p.m. -- or until all items are sold. "We will be taking donations towards the department team and promoting the AIDS Walk in general by encouraging people to sign up," says DeAnna Sosnowchik, leader of the UCSF Department of Microbiology and Immunology's AIDS Walk team. With only days to go before the July 16 fundraiser, her team is doing great, Sosnowchik says, noting that about 11 people have raised more than $1,000 dollars for the San Francisco AIDS Walk. For the second consecutive year, UCSF has organized a friendly, campuswide competition for the San Francisco AIDS Walk, which this year commemorates its 20th anniversary. The UCSF AIDS Walk Committee has set a goal of raising $65,000 and as of July 11 has raised about half that, according to the AIDS Walk website. UCSF teams are competing for a one-of-a-kind trophy, a bronzed running shoe formerly worn by Chancellor Mike Bishop. And, as an added fundraising incentive, Campus Life Services has generously donated a MacBook 1.83GHz to the first-time walker who raises the most money. It's not too late to sign up to walk or donate to the cause: click here for registration or to make a general team donation. San Francisco AIDS Walk Schedule
