Each year the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco presents a total of four Kaiser Teaching Awards-three to faculty on main campus (one each to a member of the clinical department, basic science department, and volunteer clinical faculty), and one to a volunteer clinical faculty member in Fresno. These awards are extremely prestigious and important to faculty. Winners are presented a certificate and a significant monetary reward at the School of Medicine’s commencement in San Francisco.

Renowned author James Waller, PhD, Whitworth College Edward B. Lindaman Chair and Professor of Psychology, will present a lecture titled “Human Nature and Inhuman Evil: The Psychology of Genocide and Mass Killing” on Thursday, April 10 in Fresno. The lecture will be held at 4 pm in the Veteran’s Administration Hospital Auditorium on Clinton and Fresno Avenues.

UCSF Fresno’s Latino Center, Sunnyside High School and CSU Fresno Health Careers Opportunity Program will host the third-annual Medical Mania Conference for Doctor’s Academy high school students on Saturday, April 5. The one-day event is scheduled for 7:15am to 12:00pm at CSU Fresno University Center, Room 200. Joan Voris, MD, associate dean for UCSF Fresno, will deliver the keynote address at CSU Fresno, University Center, Room 200. Parents and students will be formally welcomed to CSU Fresno by campus provost, Dr. Michael Ortiz.

UCSF Fresno will present its second medical lecture series titled “Family Health Today” at Borders in River Park, on Tuesdays during March, from 7pm to 8pm. The series will feature four health issues. UCSF Fresno faculty members are presenting the lectures as part of the University public service mission.

The University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine is formally welcoming Susan Wall, MD and Joan Voris, MD to their new roles as senior associate dean and associate dean, respectively, of the UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program at the Fresno Art Museum on Friday, February 7, from 4pm to 6pm. Haile Debas, MD, dean of UCSF School of Medicine is hosting the reception.

The UCSF Fresno Alzheimer’s Research Center (ARC) has appointed Joy A. Grado as program manager. Prior to joining ARC, Grado worked for the Marjaree Mason Center as the director of program development, quality assurance and grants.

National Groundhog Job Shadow Day is tomorrow, January 31, and UCSF Fresno and Sunnyside High School Doctor’s Academy are partnering to interest area high school students in becoming a pharmacist. The UCSF Fresno Pharmacy Education Program and the UCSF Fresno Latino Center are participating in the project. Job shadowing has proven to be an effective way to motivate students by showing them how academics are applied to the workplace.

Joseph Betancourt, MD, MPH, and program director for Multicultural Education and Affairs at Harvard University, will address Sunnyside High School Doctor’s Academy Students in Fresno on Wednesday, January 29, at 10am as a part of the visiting professorship series provided by the University of California, San Francisco, Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education and Research (LACMER). Betancourt hopes to encourage area high school students to pursue careers in the health science professions.

Applications are now available for Valley high school juniors to apply to the 16th Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program of the UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program. Students will work with members of the UCSF Fresno faculty on a variety of research projects in the Fresno area. The summer program runs from early June to early August.

The University of California, San Francisco, (UCSF) School of Medicine recently announced that Joan Voris, MD, has accepted the position of associate dean for UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program effective December 1, 2002. Voris succeeds Deborah Stewart, MD. Earlier this fall Susan Wall, MD, was appointed senior associate dean for UCSF Fresno and Graduate Medical Education. Wall serves as the primary liaison between the Fresno Program and UCSF School of Medicine Dean’s Office.
