UCSF Chancellor Sue Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, on Dec. 4 named Sally Marshall, PhD, currently vice provost of Academic Affairs, as interim executive vice chancellor and provost (EVCP).

The appointment, which is subject to approval by the UC Regents, will be effective on Jan. 1, 2010.

Marshall is a professor in the UCSF School of Dentistry’s Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences.

“Vice Provost Marshall has my deep gratitude for her willingness to fill this key leadership role during the search for a permanent successor to EVCP [A. Eugene] Washington, who will begin his new position as dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences at UCLA in February,” Desmond-Hellmann wrote in an email to the UCSF community.

“Dr. Marshall has been on the UCSF faculty for 22 years and has been highly successful as UCSF’s Vice Provost for Academic Affairs,” Desmond-Hellmann said. “The campus will be well served by having an experienced UCSF vice provost overseeing this critical area so that the current challenges can be addressed by leadership knowledgeable about the EVCP organization and the campus as a whole.”

As vice provost for Academic Affairs, Marshall is responsible for all academic personnel actions, including appointments, promotions and merit increases. She also led the creation and implementation of programs to enhance faculty life, directing the Office of Faculty Development and Advancement and leading the Chancellor’s’ Council on Faculty Life.

“I appreciate the confidence expressed by Chancellor Desmond-Hellmann in this appointment and am looking forward to working with campus leadership to further the initiatives begun by EVCP Washington,” said Marshall. “The offers of support from my colleagues across the campus have been most welcome.”

Marshall was appointed associate vice chancellor of Academic Affairs in 2005, a position that reported to Washington. Before taking that role, Marshall served as vice chair for research in the dental school’s Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences. She has a long history of mentoring faculty in the dental school, receiving praise for assisting faculty in becoming independent investigators.

During her career at UCSF, Marshall has handled complex faculty issues while serving on several Academic Senate committees, including chair of the Academic Senate Committee on Academic Personnel and chair of the Academic Senate Committee on Research.

She plays leadership roles on UCSF committees including the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Academic Diversity, which has worked to create a more diverse campus community and to implement other recommendations in the 10-point diversity initiative and the UCSF Strategic Plan.

Marshall’s research focuses on biomaterials, with an emphasis on structure-property relationships in calcified tissues, especially teeth, and novel implant materials. She was the principal investigator of a National Institutes of Health program project grant for many years on dentin characterization and modification.

Marshall has been elected president of three major professional societies, including the International Association for Dental Research. She earned a BS in Science Engineering in 1970 from Northwestern University, where she earned a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering five years later. Marshall served on the faculty at Northwestern University for 13 years prior to coming to UCSF.
