UCSF Offers Faculty Mentoring Workshops

The UCSF Faculty Mentoring Program is recognizing National Mentoring Month to underscore the importance of mentoring for UCSF faculty by spearheading a number of activities, which begin today (Jan. 12). The UCSF Faculty Mentoring Program is hosting events for both mentors and mentees that are aimed at creating a supportive work environment and advancing career and networking opportunities for faculty. Registration continues online. The events begin at noon today with a program called “One Minute Mentor,” which will help both mentors and mentees enhance their relationships by learning the five steps of the “One Minute Mentor” guide. This workshop will be presented by Mitchell D. Feldman, MD, director of faculty mentoring at UCSF. “Our vision is for all UCSF faculty to feel supported in their pursuit of a successful and satisfying career,” says Feldman. Today’s event runs from noon to 1 p.m. in Café Conference Room 3 on the second floor of San Francisco General Hospital. On Thursday, Jan. 15, mentees can participate in a two-hour workshop, titled “How to Find and Work Effectively with a Mentor.” Feldman will present this program from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Medical Sciences Building, room S 214, on the Parnassus campus. Faculty mentors are invited to a workshop, titled “A Mentor’s Guide to Advancement and Promotion,” on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the School of Nursing building, room N 225. Participants will learn critical information from experts across the University to ensure success in the advancement and promotion process of their mentees. Presenters for this workshop are: • Sally Marshall, PhD, vice provost, Academic Affairs, Faculty Development and Advancement, and chair of the Chancellor’s Council on Faculty Life • Brian Alldredge, PharmD, associate dean of academic affairs, UCSF School of Pharmacy • Caroline Damsky, PhD, associate dean of academic affairs, UCSF School of Dentistry • Donna Ferriero, MD, vice dean of academic affairs, UCSF School of Medicine • Christine Miaskowski, RN, PhD, associate dean of academic affairs, UCSF School of Nursing • Renee Navarro, MD, PharmD, associate dean of academic affairs, UCSF School of Medicine, and director of academic diversity at UCSF To continue the conversation about mentoring, the Faculty Mentoring Program urges those with a question to send it to Heather Nichols via email. Each month, a mentor will answer a submitted question in Ask a Mentor on the Academic Affairs Faculty Mentoring Program website. In addition, faculty who would like to showcase the impact that mentoring has had on their careers can send a paragraph highlighting their experience to Nichols. These stories will be spotlighted in Who Mentored You? on the Faculty Mentoring Program website, and a mentoring pin will be sent to the honored mentor. Offering mentoring opportunities to faculty, staff, students and trainees is part of UCSF’s plan to promote a supportive work environment. In fact, the UCSF Strategic Plan, released in June 2007, states that “mentoring programs should be expanded and made available to all, including staff, students and trainees.” To view a list of mentoring opportunities across campus, visit the UCSF School of Medicine mentorship website.
