Campus to Host MLK Series of Events

Haile T. Debas

The campus community is invited to participate in a series of events designed to honor the life and legacy of the slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. All events and programs are planned and sponsored by the 2007 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Committee and funded by the Cultural Enrichment Fund. Haile T. Debas, MD, UCSF chancellor emeritus and executive director of Global Health Sciences at UCSF, will deliver the keynote address, titled "Challenges and Opportunities in Global Health," on Wednesday, Jan. 17, from noon to 1 p.m. in Health Sciences West (HSW), room 300, on the Parnassus campus. Postcard Project This year, MLK festivities include the Postcard Project, which aims to foster campus connections across the world. The project consists of creating postcards (crafting the front of preprinted MLK commemorative cards) and mailing them to people around the world in an effort to share messages of inspiration and support with those who fight for human rights, civil rights and the well being of their communities. The project will kick off on Thursday, Jan. 11, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Medical Sciences Building lobby on the Parnassus campus. Throughout the first three weeks of January 2007, particularly during the weeklong celebration of MLK Week, January 12 through 19, postcard-making tables will be set up at various campus locations. Tables will be stocked with art and writing supplies to provide an opportunity for members of the campus community to design MLK commemorative postcards. MLK postcards also will be available for those who are interested in setting up their own postcard design gatherings with friends, family or co-workers to create messages of justice, unity and world peace. Please note that since postcards will be mailed, the right half of the preprinted side should be left blank to allow for addressing information and postage. Postcards will be displayed during the month of January and then mailed to prisoners, soldiers, hospital patients, the homeless, injured veterans, and human rights activists and their families. Postcards will be gathered at the postcard-making tables or at the Student Activity Center in Millberry Union, room 108W, by Friday, Jan. 19, at 5 p.m.
