UCSF Presents Parenting Program on April 20

The campus community is invited to a special program on "Powerful Non-Defensive Parenting," sponsored by the UCSF Center for Gender Equity. Sharon Strand Ellison, an internationally recognized communication consultant, is the featured speaker for the program slated for Wednesday, April 20, from noon to 1 p.m., in the UCSF School of Nursing building, room N 225. The talk is free and open to the public. Starting in the 1970's, Ellison has developed pioneering programs for children and parents, teaching skills to build solid relationships. She is author of "Taking the War out of Our Words." At UCSF, Ellison will describe how traditional communication methods cause needless power struggles with our children. Participants will gain insights and skill in providing children and teens with the boundaries they need for security, balanced with the freedom they need to grow as individuals. She will focus primarily on strengthening parents' ability to set effective limits which guide children toward being competent and reciprocal. In addition, parents will learn to ask questions that prompt their child or teen to be open and honest, give feedback without judgment, and express their own thoughts, beliefs and feelings without lecturing.
