UCSF Medical Center named a top 10 hospital nationwide for tenth consecutive year
UCSF Medical Center ranks among the nation’s top 10 premier hospitals for the tenth consecutive year and is the best in Northern California, according to the new 2010-11 America’s Best Hospitals survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report.
UCSF is named the seventh best hospital in the country, earning a spot on the survey’s “honor roll.” Of the 4,852 medical centers evaluated by U.S. News this year, only 14 earned honor roll status, demonstrating excellence and breadth of expertise by ranking at or near the top in at least six specialties.
The U.S. News score summarizes overall quality of inpatient care including balance of nurses to patients, mortality, patient safety, reputation, procedure volume, and care-related measures such as technology and patient services.
“It is gratifying that the breadth of our expertise – from cancer to neurosurgery, from ophthalmology to gynecology – is ranked among the very best in the nation. I want to commend all the UCSF clinicians, faculty, and staff, in addition to our physician partners in the community, who continually strive to improve the delivery of our care,” said UCSF Medical Center CEO Mark Laret.
In addition to the overall ranking, U.S. News evaluated 16 medical specialties. UCSF distinguished itself in the following areas:
- In nine of those specialties, UCSF placed among the top 10 medical centers nationwide: cancer; diabetes and endocrine disorders; gynecology; kidney disorders; neurology and neurosurgery; ophthalmology; pulmonology/respiratory disorders; rheumatology; and urology.
- In four specialties, UCSF is the top-ranked facility in California: cancer; gynecology; neurology and neurosurgery; and pulmonology/respiratory disorders. UCSF also is ranked best in Northern California in five additional specialties: gastroenterology/digestive disorders; ear, nose and throat disorders; geriatric care; kidney disorders; and urology.
In a separate set of pediatric specialty rankings released in June 2010, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital was ranked among the nation’s best in eight pediatric specialties, making it one of the top-ranked facilities in California.
