Artists to Talk About Their Works at UCSF Mission Bay

Four California-based artists will talk about their recent installations at the UCSF Mission Bay campus on Thursday, Dec. 13.

The UCSF Mission Bay Art Planning Committee is hosting a panel discussion with the artists at 4 p.m. in Byers Auditorium in Genentech Hall, 600 16th St. The discussion will be moderated by Janet Bishop, curator of painting and sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. A reception will follow. The featured artists are: * Rosana Castrillo Diaz, whose untitled work can be viewed on the second floor of the William J. Rutter Center; * Vincent Fecteau, whose untitled work of aluminum castings is located on floors one through five in Byers Hall; * Jean Lowe, whose work, titled Books and Ideas in an Age of Anxiety, 1994-2006, can be seen on the second-floor west lobby in Byers Hall; and * Ari Marcopoulos, whose untitled work of digital C-prints has been installed in the fifth floor west lobby in Byers Hall.

These works are part of a growing collection of art at UCSF Mission Bay. The campus features large-scale sculptures, furnishings, paintings, drawings and photographs by various artists. An ardent advocate of the arts, Chancellor Mike Bishop, MD, pledged 1 percent of all new Mission Bay campus construction costs to establish initial funding for the public art program, later to be supplemented by gifts. As is the case at other UCSF sites, Bishop wants to enrich campus life at Mission Bay by integrating a wide range of art into public spaces that reflects the diversity of the community and represents various artistic disciplines and points of view. "Our purpose is to create an environment that will be a credit and benefit to the entire community, a stimulating and pleasant place to work and visit, a permanent legacy to the city," Bishop said when he appointed the Mission Bay Art Planning Committee to develop a world-class public art program at the new campus in March 1999.
