UCSF Medical Center is recruiting team captains and walkers for the American Heart Association's signature fundraising event, called Heart Walk. Slated for Friday, Sept. 21, the walk is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m., beginning at San Francisco's Justin Herman Plaza, 1 Market St. The medical center is a sponsor of and participant in the annual event in San Francisco. Mark Laret, chief executive officer at UCSF Medical Center, is chair of this year's San Francisco walk. UCSF's goal is to recruit more than 300 team members and raise a total of $125,000, Laret said. Last year, UCSF teams raised more than $80,000, according to Karen Rago, administrative director of the UCSF Heart and Vascular Center and UCSF's "company lead" for the walk. Proceeds from the walk will help fight heart disease, the nation's No. 1 killer. A kickoff event for team captains will be held at noon on Wednesday, July 11, at UCSF. Team captains will recruit members from within their departments. The walk is part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and to empower men and women with the knowledge they need to take charge of their health. More than 1 million walkers are expected to participate in more than 450 events across the nation. The Western States Affiliate hosts Heart Walks in 26 communities in California, Nevada and Utah.
