Final Week to Support AIDS Walk San Francisco

Time is running out to register to walk, support a walker or volunteer to help out at AIDS Walk San Francisco, which is slated for Sunday, July 15. Those who want to volunteer to work at the UCSF meeting station may contact Joey Convento, volunteer coordinator. AIDS Walk San Francisco is a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) walkathon that benefits San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF), in addition to several other local AIDS service organizations. For the past 25 years, SFAF has been dedicated to providing equal access to health care, cutting-edge medicine and advocacy for their clients, regardless of ability to pay. Last year, the UCSF combined team ranked No. 5 in the Top Fundraising Teams, collecting more than $69,000 for AIDS Walk San Francisco 2006. This year, UCSF hopes to raise $75,000. Ten UCSF teams are rallying the troops in the final push to raise funds for AIDS organizations. Each team is also vying to win the UCSF AIDS Walk Trophy, a bronzed running shoe formerly worn by Chancellor Mike Bishop, MD. This is the third year that the trophy will be awarded to the team that raises the most money per capita in the campuswide contest. As of July 5, UCSF Campus Team No. 0094 leads in raising funds, with more than $7,000 in donations. The team is a combination of staff from Financial and Administrative Services, the offices of the chancellor and executive vice chancellor, and University Advancement and Planning. "United, we hope to recruit you and your family and friends to walk with us and raise money to help those in our community either affected by or infected with HIV/AIDS," the team co-leaders wrote in an email this week. Discounted Parking The AIDS Walk begins and ends in Sharon Meadow in Golden Gate Park. UCSF Transportation Services is offering AIDS Walk participants parking for a discounted $3 flat fee at the parking garage. Drivers should enter the gate at the intersection of Carl, Irving and Arguello streets to get the discounted rate. Free T-Shirts Sign-in begins at 9 a.m. UCSF registered walkers can pick up a free T-shirt to wear to show off team spirit. Breakfast snacks will be served at the UCSF meeting station before the walk officially begins at 10:30 a.m. Group Photo A group photo of all UCSF participants is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. UCSF registered walkers will also be provided lunch at the end of the walk, which usually takes two to three hours for most participants to finish. Entertainment The day is filled with live music and family entertainment. The KidZone features a bounce house, face painting and free carousel rides! All walkers are also eligible to win fun prizes, and there are many incentive awards for fundraisers who collect and turn in amounts of $150 or more. Those who can't attend the event may support a UCSF team by sending donations or pledges to: AIDS Walk San Francisco, P.O. Box 193920, San Francisco, CA 94119-3920.
