UCSF to Enhance Websites, Convert Newsbreak to Quarterly in 2006

The UCSF Public Affairs office will be boosting efforts to deliver timely and thoughtful news and information to its growing web audience in part by strengthening the content and capabilities of the main UCSF website. Web readership has increased 27 percent this year to an average 83,000 visits a week, according to Jeff Miller, director of University Publications. Among the coming web enhancements are revamping the main website, establishing a news center webpage to provide links to relevant information created both inside and outside the University, expanding video storytelling, adding interactive features, and introducing podcasts, blogs and RSS feeds. To devote more resources to the web, University Publications will convert Newsbreak to a quarterly, eight-page publication that provides focused coverage on significant campus issues and developments, similar to the recent special edition about UCSF Mission Bay. Lisa Cisneros will continue as editor of Newsbreak and will be able to spend more time on her daily duties, editing, writing and videotaping for UCSF websites. "It's been very gratifying chronicling UCSF's history, both in print and web communications over the last 11 years," says Cisneros, a senior public information representative. "I look forward to advancing our web presence by employing novel tools and techniques to deliver timely and lively news." Delivery of the last biweekly issue of Newsbreak will be on Friday, Dec. 16. The new Newsbreak will debut in early 2006, focusing on the fruitful relationship between UCSF and San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center. All Newsbreak content, including honors and awards, will now be posted in a new People section of UCSF Today. Private support listings will be included online in their own category. News briefs, such as campus announcements, will be posted in the Campus Notes section. In addition, every eight-page issue of Newsbreak will be posted as a PDF online. The special issue covering the UCSF Mission Bay celebration is now available (pdf) on the Mission Bay website.
