Without their courageous fight, resilience, and perseverance, many freedoms that we enjoy today would never have been obtained. The fact that I am Chair of UCSF Surgery is proof of the advances made, in part because of the courage of the people at that watershed moment in history.” -Julie Sosa, UCSF Department of Surgery Chair . ✨Follow @UCSF✨ as we celebrate LGBT Pride Month by highlighting members of the UCSF community who represent the LGBTQIA spectrum. .

“You need to do what allows you to have all of your happiness,” says UCSF alum @doctor.aamodt . “It’s not going to be your profession alone. It’s going to be all the other things around you. Your family, your friends, your hobbies. So do what enables you to be happy.”
.
"Except maybe it’s not happiness that’s the goal, but instead consciousness [and] fulfillment,” he adds, reflecting on the hard work, sacrifices, and highs and lows of founding his orthodontics company, @uniformteeth “Fulfillment sometimes hurts...but that shows me that I'm on the edge of making a big change that could help a lot of people. And sometimes that doesn't feel like happiness the whole way through.”

#orthodontics #ucsfproudThree cheers for this UCSF-er and good samaritan! 👏👏👏

UCSF School of Dentistry @ucsfdentistry resident Adam Walker chased down a would-be kidnapper who tried to snatch a toddler from his mother in the Castro neighborhood. "Without thinking I took off running after him," Adam told ABC 7 News.
.
Adam chased the suspect for several blocks, cornering him until police were on-scene. The San Francisco Police Department recognized Adam for his actions, saying that they “appreciate his bravery and are grateful for his help.”

As a result, I am committed to serving minority populations, specifically in the areas of mental health in LGBT individuals, Latinos and other minorities and HIV psychiatry.”
.
UCSF’s Assistant Psychiatry Professor Peter Ureste and his colleagues advocated that healthcare providers undergo sensitivity training after seeing that aggressions and gay epithets from patients were not being addressed by the treatment team, which in turn affected the clinical learning environment. That’s also when he decided to be “out” and promote visibility.
.
When asked how UCSF can better support people of all sexual orientations and gender identities across the health sciences, Dr. Ureste said, “Recognize that sexual minorities exist, as they are often times overlooked compared to other minority groups. Create curricula to educate future health professionals about health disparities and other health issues affecting LGBTQ individuals."

#UCSF #UCSFPRIDE #PrideMonth#LGBT#LGBTQ #LBGTQIA #STEM#OutInSTEM#Pride2019Necessity really *is* the mother of invention.

When then-ER doctor Stella Dao found herself back at work after the birth of premature twins, she encountered a problem that many new moms will find relatable: she didn’t have time to pump breast milk.

But Dao, an alum of the UCSF School of Medicine, didn’t simply give up. She looked for a way to help herself and other women facing the same dilemma.
With ping pong balls, scissors, and a #tupperware container, she developed the concept for a portable, hands-free breast pump at her kitchen counter.

These days, new moms know it as “Freemie." 🎓This June, we're celebrating #UCSFAlumniMonth by shining a spotlight on our remarkable alumni. 🎓

.
UCSF’s Vice Chancellor, Strategic Communications & University Relations Barbara French didn't step fully out of the closet until the early 1990s, twenty years after entering the professional workforce. The support of her friends, the visibility of the LGBTQ community in San Francisco, and a supportive work environment all were factors in her decision to live her life more openly.
.
As French prepares for retirement after 14 years at UCSF, she hopes that everyone can educate themselves about all sexual orientations and gender identities. “We can foster friendship. We can be an ally.”

.
Jennie, the one-time president of the @AARP, played an instrumental role in the design and adoption of an innovative program (adopted into federal law!) that gives older adults the chance to remain at home, within their community, even as their physical health changes. Her son, Erik, is now an orthopedic surgeon at UCSF.
