Neuroscience
unlocking the mysteries of the brain
At UCSF, a cadre of world-renowned neuroscientists is working
to unlock the mysteries of the brain and provide effective treatments
for myriad neurologic disorders. Their research is reshaping medical
science’s understanding of how the human brain develops
and functions, and their discoveries are helping to determine
causes and treatments for some of the most deadly diseases of
the brain.
The fundraising priorities featured below reflect the great scope
and promise of the research taking place at UCSF:
Brain Tumor Research Center
Working in conjunction with scientists at UCSF’s Comprehensive
Cancer Center and Department of Neurosurgery, investigators at
the UCSF Brain Tumor Research Center (BTRC) study the biology
and behavior of brain tumors. The program’s expansion to
the new Helen Diller
Family Cancer Research Building at UCSF Mission Bay will speed
the pace of discovery by placing these outstanding researchers
in a facility designed to provide access to the latest technologies
and encourage collaboration. Gifts to this priority support key
faculty and fund research projects and clinical trials that provide
the basis for new and improved clinical therapies.
To support the BTRC, contact the UCSF Development Office at 415/476-6922
or mail@support.ucsf.edu.
Center for Neurobiology and Psychiatry
Using the new tools created by neurobiology and genetics, the
physician-scientists of the Center for Neurobiology and Psychiatry
analyze the complicated brain functions that control human behavior
and the brain abnormalities that cause mental illness. Gifts to
this priority provide funds for project seed money, faculty recruitment
and equipment.
To support the Center for Neurobiology and Psychiatry, contact the UCSF Development Office at 415/476-6922 or mail@support.ucsf.edu.
Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases
The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at UCSF unites
60 top investigators from diverse areas of expertise for one cause:
the prevention of common neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS,
Alzheimer’s, Huntington's, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s.
Gifts to this priority fund basic research and clinical trials
at the IND and support faculty training activities designed to
foster collaboration among researchers.
To support the IND, contact the UCSF Development Office at 415/476-6922
or mail@support.ucsf.edu.
Wheeler Center for the Neurobiology of Addiction
Scientists at the Wheeler Center for the Neurobiology of Addiction investigate how alcohol, tobacco and other
drugs of abuse impair normal brain function to develop
effective methods of preventing and treating addiction. Gifts to this priority support innovative
research projects by young scientists, attracting new expertise
to the field of addiction research.
